The Peak District
has a long & proud railway heritage, indeed many towns owe their existence
to the railway companies. The landscape of the Peak posed some great challenges
to the railway builders and produced some of the most unusual and spectacular
railways in the country.
The early
ones sprang from the Canal Age, the Peak Forest Tramway was opened in
the 1790s and was horse powered at first. These early lines were designed
to carry heavy goods & minerals, not people.

Passenger railways
came later, with the Midland Railway line through the Peak begun in 1848.
A ride on the railway in those early days was a thrilling experience to
people unused to speed and dramatic scenery.

Today, the trains
may have changed, but a train ride still provides unprecedented views
of the spectacular Peak District scenery and speedy access to our major
towns and cities.
